Veiled chameleons are the easiest to keep. They eat well, stay healthy with the right setup, and handle beginner mistakes better than most other types. If this is your first chameleon, start with a veiled.
Chameleons eat live bugs. Crickets are the most common feeder. You can also give them hornworms, roaches, and silkworms. Before each feeding, dust the bugs with calcium powder to keep your chameleon healthy.
An adult chameleon needs a cage at least 24 inches wide, 24 inches deep, and 48 inches tall. The bigger the better. Screen cages work best because they let fresh air move through.
Veiled chameleons need a tall screen cage, a UVB bulb, and a basking spot around 85°F. Mist the cage twice a day so they can drink water off the leaves. Feed them crickets every day when young, and every other day once they are full grown.
Panther chameleons need daytime temps around 80–85°F and humidity between 50 and 70 percent. Give them a strong UVB light and lots of live plants inside the cage. Feed them crickets and a mix of other bugs every other day.
Jackson chameleons like cooler temps than most — around 72–78°F during the day and even cooler at night. Mist the cage at least twice a day. They are calm and slow, but they need good air flow and steady humidity to stay healthy.
Most pet chameleons live 5 to 8 years with good care. Veiled chameleons often reach 6 to 8 years. Panther chameleons can live up to 10 years when kept in the right conditions.
Chameleons are great pets for the right person. They are quiet, colorful, and unlike any other animal you can keep at home. But they need daily care, the right lighting, and a proper cage. They are not as hands-on as dogs or cats, but they are just as fun to watch.
